Otjozondjupa sits in north-central Namibia around Otjiwarongo, Grootfontein and Okahandja, and is best known for the Waterberg Plateau — a sandstone table mountain that shelters some of the country’s most successful rhino conservation projects. Most travellers pass through on the main road between Windhoek and Etosha, making it a practical and scenic overnight stop rather than a final destination in its own right.

    Directions: In Waterberg Wilderness Valley, about 5 minutes’ drive from the park’s main reception.

    Activities: Rhino drive/tracking, plateau hikes, sundowners.

    • Communal swimming pool; firewood available for purchase

    Self-catering – lodge restaurant seating only available space-permitting, no reservations taken.

    Directions: Düsternbrook Guest Farm is located about 35km north of Windhoek in the Khomas Highlands, roughly an hour’s drive from the city.

    Activities: Cheetah and leopard drives, game drives, early morning mountain drives, horse riding, and hiking trails (1-5 hours) through a private game reserve with 16 species including hippo, giraffe, sable antelope and kudu.

    Amenities:

    • Two small campsites — Bush Camp and Pioneer campsite by the river
    • Large pool and bar at the main house
