Park / Reserve: Skeleton Coast

Namibia’s Skeleton Coast stretches from Swakopmund north through Henties Bay and the Dorob and Skeleton Coast National Parks, a foggy, wind-scoured shoreline littered with shipwrecks and prized by anglers for galjoen, kabeljou and steenbras. Dozens of named fishing spots dot the coast road north of Henties Bay, each with its own basic pull-off camping area, while Swakopmund and Walvis Bay offer full-service coastal camping with restaurants, activities and easy access to the Cape Cross seal colony and Dorob National Park’s lichen fields.

    Directions: Cape Cross Lodge & Campsite is situated 60km north of Henties Bay and 120km north of Swakopmund, on the Skeleton Coast next to the Cape Fur Seal colony.

    Activities: Visiting the famous Cape Cross seal colony, exploring the Skeleton Coast.

    Gecko Ridge

    Ten spacious campsites, semi-enclosed for additional privacy, bestow all the necessities for a camper’s getaway. Another two larger sites provide space for family and friends travelling together.

    The communal ablution facilities are modern and provide all essential conveniences. A separate utility area for washing dishes and doing laundry is also available.

  • Gobabeb

    Gobabeb

    Directions: Gobabeb is located in the Namib-Naukluft Park, about 120km southeast of Walvis Bay, at the meeting point of the dune sea, gravel plains and the Kuiseb River.

    Activities: Desert ecology walks and access to the research centre’s guided programmes; a rare opportunity to see three distinct Namib ecosystems in one location.

    Amenities:

    • Clean, neat campsite a few metres from the riverbed
    • Good ablution facilities
    • Individual wind shelters at each site

    Note: Gobabeb is primarily a desert research and training centre; camping is limited and should be arranged in advance.
