Park / Reserve: Caprivi / Zambezi Region

The Zambezi Region (still widely known as the Caprivi Strip) is Namibia’s lush, well-watered panhandle, wedged between the Okavango, Kwando and Zambezi rivers and bordering Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. River lodges around Kongola, Bukalo, Divundu and Katima Mulilo offer riverside camping with houseboat cruises, tiger fishing and access to Bwabwata National Park, a stark contrast to the desert landscapes found elsewhere in Namibia — and a natural link on any self-drive route toward Victoria Falls or the Okavango Delta.

    Ihaha Campsite 9

    Directions: On the Chobe riverfront, about 35 km west of Kasane; enter the park at Kasane or Ngoma Bridge and follow the river to camp. 4×4 required.

    Activities: Excellent game viewing right from camp – the site is unfenced, so wildlife often passes through.

    Amenities:

    • Shared ablution blocks with flush toilets and solar-heated hot showers
    • Braai, concrete table and firepit at each site
    • Water tap nearby (no electricity, no firewood sold on site – bring your own)

    Advance booking is essential, especially June–October. A valid campsite reservation is required to enter the park; park fees are paid separately.

  • Ngonye River Camp

    Ngonye River Camp

    Note: This camp is actually located at Sioma Falls in Zambia, near the Katima Mulilo/Sesheke border – a popular stop for travellers continuing north from the Zambezi region.

    Directions: Near the Katima Mulilo/Sesheke border crossing, about 11 km from Ngonye Waterfall.

    Activities: Boat trips and fishing, visits to Ngonye Waterfall.

    Amenities:

    • Shaded grass camping pitches with fire pits, taps and power points nearby
    • Self-catering sink and stove
    • Two en-suite chalets also available
    • WiFi and solar power

    Rate: Camping around US$10 pp; chalets around US$25 for two (confirm current rates).

    Maramba River Lodge

    Note: Maramba River Lodge is actually located in Livingstone, Zambia, about 4 km from Victoria Falls, within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the elephant corridor.

    Activities: River safaris by motorboat, wildlife viewing (elephants, hippos, birdlife), children’s playground, bicycle hire.

    Amenities:

    • Chalets or glamping tents (family rooms for 4–6)

    Directions: On the Okavango Panhandle; from Maun drive 101 km towards Ghanzi, turn right at Sehitwa towards Shakawe, continue past Etsha 6 into Etsha 13 and follow signs to camp. Accessible by 4×4 only (thick sand road) – non-4×4 guests should arrange a transfer from Etsha 13.

    Activities: Fishing (noted for large tigerfish catches), birding, mokoro trips, scenic helicopter flights.
